Project 27 - Speed & Chrome's Land Speed Record Attempt

Project '27

Racing Toward the Future

Yosemite Machine has all the parts for the motor and are just waiting for Ross pistons to supply the pistons and rings. They said about three weeks then assembly will begine.

Tradeway Transmissions is currently working on the Turbo 400 that will mount up behind our blown 383. Gear Vendors is shipping our unit this week.

We have already received our new sprint car style headers from Sanderson and boy are they pretty. Can’t wait to see those mounted up.

The 9” is getting a couple of minor tweaks. We should have that back in a couple of days then we can paint it up and do the final assembly.

Every thing is coming along very well.

We are looking sponsors for a few items listed below.

Get a hold of Lance@speednchrome.com if you would like to become a sponsor.

Land speed racing is by no means an exception to this rule of prep before racing. So for us at Speed & Chrome, no matter how impatient we may get on our Project 27, it is our prep time now. But we are racing toward the race, so to speak.

Lately, we have been concentrating on the heart of our Project 27, trying to get everything perfect and to spec. A thousand and one bits and pieces have to be collected and then made to work perfectly with the other bits and pieces collected.

Our friends at Yosemite Machine have been busy seeing to it that the seasoned pieces are perfect. The crank has been turned and indexed so that we can make engine displacement right on the nose for our class. Our seasoned 327 block is waiting for a set of splayed four-bolt caps to add strength to our lower end.

Our roller cam is off at Erson Cams and getting the final touches as we go to press. It should be home at the machine shop soon, along with a set of matching valve springs and roller tappets.

An engine has got to breathe to make the run. That fancy new camshaft and lifters would be useless without an exceptional set of heads to round out the package.

For that, Brodix® Cylinder Heads has stepped up to the plate and supplied us with a beautiful set of Track 1® heads. Perhaps beautiful is an understatement here. Raised rails help keep the oil on the inside while we make full throttle passes.

The CNC ported heads have an extra feature that is worthy of mention: Brodix® opted to hand blend the bowls before shipping them off to us to use in our assault on the Land Speed Record.

Are the heads up to the task? Well, the numbers are something like this: with 2.08 intakes and 1.60 exhausts, these particular heads flow right at 316 and 227 CFM, respectively. And that is straight out of the box without anyone ever doing anything more than assembly. Not too shabby and more than up to the task.

We also managed to pick up some of those required little pieces to make it Project 27 safe. Yes, besides making our little mouse pull us to the 200 mph mark and do that within the confines of fuel and cubic inch requirements, we are also apt to make it safe. Imagine that — the SCTA does not want anyone to get hurt while they are out there having fun. Neither do we!

One small requirement is a harmonic balancer that will not explode and send shrapnel off into the crowd. In a quest for an SFI-approved balancer, we became aquatinted with a Modesto area Pontiac dealer. Bonander Pontiac in Turlock, Calif. has made sure that we have an SFI-approved balancer as we strive to meet all the requirements to keep our Project 27 safe.

Progress, however impatient as we may be, is still progress. We are stoked to say the least.

Racing towards the race,

Your S&C Staff
